Early Settlement

During the management of your transactions, the delivery of currencies may, in some cases, take place before the transaction maturity. In these cases, you need to perform the early settlement of the transaction.

Basically, the early settlement consists in creating a spot/forward swap in which the spot leg has the same direction as the original transaction, and the forward leg has the opposite direction. The FX module enables you to enter partial early settlements and total early settlements.

The type of the generated spot leg is "Exercising", the type of the forward leg is "Exercise" and the type of the initial transaction (the transaction subject to the early settlement) is "Exercised".

The following diagram shows the spreads between the amount of an early settlement at the current rate and the amount of an early settlement at the historical exchange rate.

Types of Early Settlement

  • When you exercise a total early settlement, the initial transaction is completely cleared. You cannot perform actions on this transaction anymore.
  • When you exercise a partial early settlement, the initial contract is still applied for the remainder, like it was a forward contract. You can exercise other partial early settlements, carry forward the balance or settle the contract. However, you cannot modify the initial transaction, as opposed to a forward contract that was not carried forward.
